Melky Suspended 50 games for Positive Drug Test
Earlier today, San Francisco Giants Left Fielder Melky Cabrera was suspended for 50 games without pay by Major League Baseball for testing positive for Testosterone. Obviously this is a humongous blow to the Giants who are still fighting to hold on to the NL West against both the Dodgers & Diamondbacks. Plus the loss of Cabrera leaves a big hole in the Giants line up that will no doubt have to be filled by Buster Posey, Pablo Sandoval, and newly acquired Hunter Pence.
Here is the statement issued by MLB upon suspending Cabrera:
”The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera has received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for Testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension of Cabrera is effective immediately.”
I guess if there is one positive to the situation, if you can even call it that, Cabrera issued a statement accepting responsibility for the positive test and saying sorry to the fans.
“My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used. I accept my suspension under the Joint Drug Program and will try to move on with my life. I am deeply sorry for my mistake and I apologize to my teammates, to the San Francisco Giants organization and to the fans for letting them down.”
One has to wonder how much Giants PR is going to have to go into damage control in terms of spinning the story and maybe even may have to issue an apology to CSN’s Andrew Baggarly for breaking the story back in July almost by accident. Let’s just say it turns out it wasn’t Dodger fans trying to start PED rumors on twitter.
More on this is as the story develops and more on the Cabrera situation as more information comes to light.
