Wait now Bartolo Colon got suspended for PED’s…WTF!

Bartolo Colon has been suspended for 50 games after failing a drug test. First reported by CBS sports writer, Jon Heyman, Colon will begin his suspension immediately and will probably not be in the Oakland A’s playoff plans.

The assumption is that just like Melky Cabrera, Colon tested positive for raised levels of testosterone and thus was given the suspension. I guess the first thing that came to mind when I first heard of the suspension was, ”Wait WTF, Colon got popped for PED’s!” You know the 39 year old, 5’11, 275 lb Adonis known as Bartolo.

Colon has already issued a statement as well as the A’s with regard to the suspension news.

Colon’s Statement:

“I apologize to the fans, to my teammates and to the Oakland A’s. I accept responsibility for my actions and I will serve my suspension as required by the Joint Drug Program.”

Oakland Athletics statement:

“The Oakland Athletics are disappointed to learn of today’s suspension of pitcher Bartolo Colón. The organization fully supports Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and its efforts to eliminate performance-enhancing substances from our game. Per the Basic Agreement, the A’s will have no further comment.”

My quick assessment on the loss of Colon is that while it will hurt and put some strain on the starting staff in the short term, the A’s can weather his loss. The pitching staff is deep and with A.J Griffin close to returning and Brett Anderson finally returning to the staff, Oakland has a lot of options to replace Colon. Oh and I didn’t even mention the fact that Dan Straily can be brought back in 10 days as well to fill the starting pitching void left by Colon.

Even though many Giants fans are getting their chance to clap back at A’s fans after all the Melky comments when he got busted, losing Colon doesn’t have quite the same impact that losing Melky will have. At this point, both sides of the bay are just comparing syringes and who’s is more fancy and shiny.
