They make almost double the revenue that the #2 ranked Red Sox make, with very little debt. Red Sox does open their pockets, but their operating income last year was a negative. How much longer would they continue to do this. Disagreements about money is probably a reason Theo Epstein is no longer with the team.
G's did have the 4th highest operating income in the league last year. This is due to their WS win. If they don't continue to win, this will fade and their operating income will go down. When Lincecum and Cain gets their pay day, they will get big contracts. The G's owners have to plan for these things.
The Mets, which has similar revenue as G's, thought that opening their wallets to pay for high priced free agents is the way to go. Look how that has hurt them. Not only did not win, they are heavily in debt, and along with the Red Sox, are one of 3 MLB teams that are losing money.
No team will compete with Yankees in making money
