My points:
#1) Depending on where you get your information, we are the 4th or 5th largest market in the U.S.
#2) We are one of the most historic/storied franchises in baseball.
#3) We have one of the best (if not THE best stadiums) in baseball, and all professional sports.
#4) We just won a world series and our popularity is at an all-time high. Our team is sick.
#5) Our owners are filthy rich.
#6) We own 25% of CSN Bay Area.
#7) There is a direct correlation between winning games and gaining more revenue and overall franchise value.
Our territory stretches far and wide, roughly from central CA up through Oregon and out to, oh I don't know... Utah.
Since we won in 2010 we've all noticed the entire area exploding with Giants fever. Its not just for lifetime baseball fans anymore. I was recently talking with two stylish 20 somethings who knew every recent G's transaction, as if they scoured the internet for Giants news to feed their addiction. Attractive young women, acting like complete baseball nerds. 4 years ago if that was the case, they at least wouldn't have been so open about it, and I sincerely doubt it was the case.
Its become entirely hip to be a Giants fan. Everybody around here is. We dwarf the A's fans these days, which if you recall the Bash Brothers days, hasn't always been the case.
We got the stadium, and it is living up to (or exceeding) every expectation that could've possibly been placed on it. It fits our franchise/city/area like a glove. The Giants with Lincecum, Wilson, Pablo, Posey, Cain, MadBum, are deservedly the talk of the town. And we are a pretty huge market with extremely significant pride and spending power if you look at SF/Silicon Valley/Bay Area.
We are the Giants, John McGraw, Christy Mathewson, Willie Mays, McCovey, Barry Bonds... at one time we were THE most proud National League franchise in all of baseball.
And from a business standpoint, what owners would not want to maximize their profits and increase the overall value of their asset? That's just good economics.
We've seen what a World Series does for the area. We are a larger market than Boston. We just sold out every game last year. Our merchandise revenue must be through the roof. We own 25% of Comcast Bay Area...
How can we even HAVE a budget? How does that work for the owners? Do they seriously want to risk going back to say 3 years ago when we were at the bottom of the NL West, and KNBR was talking about how the allure/honeymoon effect of the stadium was over. A stadium can't sell a complete baseball experience or maintain a titanium strong fan base. But the Giants in said stadium with Lincecum, Cain, MadBum, Wilson, Posey, and Panda as a STARTING POINT can. We should be adding any player we CAN to that foundation.
We already invested in Zito/Rowand/Huff. The money is there. Those players were obviously mistakes for the price we paid, but what are they telling us? We have to wait a few years until Zito is gone to free up that money again? Why? I seriously am missing something here. Our fans have shown that "if you build it they will come". Our stadium is proof of this. You can see proof of this in other franchises like the Yankees/Red Sox/Phillies/Angels....
Why start getting skimpy on the salary of the players who will actually contribute to the on-field product you are selling?
I mean, we can't afford Jimmy Rollins? With a solid offense we are gold standard across the board. Our team is motivated and capable of winning and going deep into the playoffs. The entire Bay Area is ready to explode with Giants excitement. You wanna save a few million dollars and jeopardize all that? That seems like a pretty big risk. Much riskier than signing just about whoever you can get to put together the best 25 man roster you can. We are SOOO CLOSE. If the ownership made a consistent commitment to putting a top quality product on the field the buzz we are experiencing right now would never die.
We would be the Yankees of the West.
I just don't understand why we are putting that all on the line because of an annual budget that includes guys like Zito/Rowand. Those are mistakes we made. Sunk costs. Forget about them. Put up more money and watch the revenue pour in and the value of the franchise skyrocket.
What am I missing here?
I don't understand our budget
