In my opinion management needs to suck it up and basically erase all memory of zito and rowand from the team and the budget.
It's not the players faults that we are saddled with those contracts. Its not the fans faults. Its strictly on the owners.

If a player has poor performance, he rides the pine. If fans don't show up to their team's games, buy merchandise, etc., the team will have a lousy revenue stream.

If the owners make a horrible decision and sign a player to an undeserved long term contract, the players and fans have to suck it up.

If I were the G's I'd basically wipe those numbers off the board, and replace them with actual players, such as Reyes, or Beltran.

They should, of course, learn from their mistakes and not sign questionable long term deals, but I do think that $5-10M here or there in a ST deal is grossly overvalued. Say we could pay Reyes $30M for 2 years, or $23 for 3 years...., we'd have a good shot at getting him.

What else would happen? In 2 or 3 years we'd be free of that contract and during that time we'd have one of the best fits for our current team available.

What's in it for the owners? The VALUE of the FRANCHISE! We've seen what a WS can do for the team/fanbase/community in terms of ticket and merchandise sales. If we had a rockstar offense to go with our shutdown pitching, and our amazing ballpark, we'd be a guaranteed sell-out every single game. The buzz around the Giants would stay as it was last year for years to come. Every year. And a winning tradition would be born.

Our owners have the deep pockets. Even if they have to run at a loss for a couple seasons, if they do it in the name of increasing the overall value of the franchise, they will reap the benefits in the long run.

I just don't understand why we, as an organization, need to worry so much about the bad decisions of Zito/Rowand contracts. Can't they just think big picture, absorb the losses and do whatever they can to get the best product out on the field??

Last I checked there was no salary cap in baseball. Its up to our owners to grow the franchise to be on par with the Yankees/Red Sox/Dodgers. We are SF/Bay Area/Silicon Valley and all of NorCal. Our owners are loaded. Our team should be too.

Then just make sure you put the right people in place to make the best possible decisions...
