His head is just too messed up. That game got us to the WS, and there were plenty of people shuddering at the thought of him pitching it. And while Vogelsong doesn't have the dynamic stuff Sanchez features during those ever-so-rare moments of lucidity, he's very good, very reliable and a more than adequate 4th starter. Sanchez was never going to be the guy who would step up if we ever lose Lincecum and Cain. Bumgarner is that guy. And they need to find another one to develop the minors. And, contrary to the views of some here, I don't think Wheeler would necessarily have panned out to the degree that he would have become that guy. Surkamp definitely isn't.
Regarding "buying high," it's one year, a contract year, and he did what he did last year by getting in shape. Let's see what Gary Brown does at Richmond. I think if he does well, he comes up in Sept. to get a taste of the big leagues, starts 2013 at Fresno, and comes up mid-season. The AZ Fall League shows he has a ways to go. But if - unlike, say, Nick Noonan - he shows that he makes a quick transition to the tougher league, they won't need to fill that spot much longer than a year.
I'm leery of Cabrera, too, due to the ups and downs. But it's not like they sold the store to get him.
With Sanchez and "selling low", we got the most important game he will ever pitch out of him, the clincher against San Diego. I doubt he ever rises to that again.
