He's a fairly expensive starter who has never been able to put it together, and in fact, took a big step backwards. His value is at an all-time low.
Cabrera showed last year what he can do when he's in shape and motivated. He's less expensive than Sanchez and fills a position of need on this team. He is NOT Torres 2.0, who had a career year at 32. Cabrera is 27 and appears to be on the upswing. Also, this trade likely makes SF a more attractive destination for Beltran.
The game is not all about home runs. It's about scoring runs. Cabrera had 87 rbi and 102 runs last year.
Sanchez is a bigger gamble.
